Corton Charlemagne is home to the story of "the emperor with the flowery beard": Charlemagne had Chardonnay planted on the land of Aloxe in 775, so that the wine he drank would not leave traces on his beard. Charlemagne's land is spread over a brown limestone soil which gives the wine fatness and complexity.
Situation géographique et terroir
Corton Charlemagne is home to the story of "the emperor with the flowery beard": Charlemagne had Chardonnay planted on the land of Aloxe in 775, so that the wine he drank would not leave traces on his beard. Charlemagne's land is spread over brown limestone soil which gives the wine fatness and complexity. The mountain of Corton in Aloxe-Corton is the largest Grand Cru appellation area in Burgundy. This specificity comes from the location of the village, at the junction of the terroirs between the Côte de Beaune and the Côte de Nuits and from the orientation of the vines following a south-east/south-west arc, very rare in our region.
Vinification
The grapes are sorted on a vibrating table as soon as they arrive at the winery. Before fermentation, we proceed to a cold maceration at 10°C for 4 to 5 days. Slow vatting is carried out to extract all the finesse of the tannins. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 14 to 18 months, with light toasting.
